ABOUT VIRGINIA: HOPEWELL, VA

Hopewell, Virginia is one of the oldest continually settled communities in the nation. In 1607, just a few days after the first settlers landed in Jamestown, Captain Christopher Newport explored the Hopewell area. A community was formed there in 1613. An Indian massacre occurred in 1622, but the tenacious survivors remained and rebuilt. As with most of Virginia, Hopewell was the site of many Revolutionary War battles, and during the Civil War, the community became one of Ulysses S. Grant's headquarters. Historic Hopewell has preserved many of the sites and buildings that tell of its past.

Hopewell is located in the Tidewater Physiographic Province, on the Virginia Coastal Plain near where the Appomattox and James Rivers converge. Tubing, canoeing and kayaking, and fishing are all enjoyed by Hopewell residents.

Virginia's capital city of Richmond is only 20 miles northwest of Hopewell, and Washington D.C. is 115 miles to the north. The population of 22,000 (census 2000) is a part of Prince George County, which has 73 recognized historic sites within it, and is known for being a premier deer and turkey hunting area. Throughout the county, many old plantation homes are visited by countless tourists each year, while Hopewell offers fine restaurants and shopping to those tourists as well.

Prince George County is located within the Richmond-Petersburg Metropolitan area, a thriving business community. The county is strategically located between Interstates 95 and 295, giving the area easy access to all the Eastern markets. The Ports of Richmond and Hampton Road are both nearby, making this a prime location for business.

Hopewell and Prince George County enjoy one of the lowest tax structures in the entire region. An Enterprise Zone is located within the county, offering new businesses even more tax incentives at both state and local levels. Part of Virginia's Gateway Region, one of the fastest growing regions in the state, the city of Hopewell offers close proximity to the new growth, while still retaining its natural beauty.
