- What Our Clients Say
“They sent somebody to visit me in the hospital and get my side of the story (totally free). I was assigned Mr. Crawford and told that we had a case. Fast forward about 9 months later and I received literally 14x what the insurance company had offered me. This is after the lawyer and medical fees as well. So basically this was totally free and I barely had to do anything I am so glad I called Marks and Harrison and I will be recommending them to all of my family and friends.”
— Robert Smith
If you or a loved one has recently been involved in a motor vehicle crash, premises liability, or any other type of accident, you should see a doctor right away. Although you have no visible injuries, you may be suffering from serious internal injuries such as bleeding and organ damage.
If another person’s negligence caused your internal injuries, you have a right to seek compensation for all medical expenses you incur to treat them. You may have other options available to you as well, including workers’ compensation or Social Security Disability benefits.
As one of the oldest and largest personal injury law firms in Virginia, Marks & Harrison has the skill, experience and resources you need when seeking a full recovery of your medical costs and other damages after suffering internal injuries through no fault of your own.
With offices located in Richmond and ten other cities throughout Virginia, we can meet with you today. Call or reach us online to get started with a free consultation.
How Can Our Lawyers Help After You Suffer an Internal Injury?
Marks & Harrison can get to work on your case right away. If you have suffered internal injuries due to the suspected negligence of another, we can conduct an immediate investigation of your case.
The goal of our investigation will be to determine how you suffered your internal injuries and who should be held responsible for your medical bills, lost income, pain and suffering and other damages.
Our firm features experienced investigators who know how to gather important evidence in accident and injury cases. We also work with highly qualified experts who can help us to determine the nature and extent of your internal injuries.
We will pursue all of your legal options, which may include:
- Personal injury damages – If the negligence of another person caused your internal injuries, we can seek a settlement with the at-fault party’s insurance company or, if necessary, go to court on your behalf.
- Workers’ compensation benefits – If you suffered internal injuries due to a work-related accident, we can seek benefits that can cover your medical bills and a portion of the wages you would otherwise lose due to your inability to work. If your injuries were caused by the negligence of a non-employer, we may able to pursue a third-party injury claim as well.
Why Should You Get Checked for Internal Injuries?
When you are in a car, truck or motorcycle collision – or struck by a car as a bicyclist or pedestrian – you suffer blunt trauma to the body. The same trauma occurs when you suffer a fall or get struck by an object.
The impact may leave you with only minor cuts, bumps or bruises on the outside. As a result, you may think you have suffered no serious harm and see no need to get checked by a doctor.
However, inside your body, you may have suffered major internal damage caused by your body’s absorption of the force of the impact. Areas of your body that may have been impacted include:
- Brain and skull – An accident may cause a skull fracture, damage brain tissue or cause bleeding to occur in and around the brain, or hemorrhaging. Sharp and sudden headaches, confusion, blurry vision, slurred speech, numbness or tingling in the limbs may be signs of injury.
- Heart – A blow to the chest in an accident may cause a person to suffer bruising of the heart muscle, or a myocardial contusion, or it may cause a tear or rupture of the aorta, which supplies blood to the entire body. Chest pain or tightness, sudden acceleration in heart rate, loss of breath and nausea may indicate that your accident has caused heart damage.
- Ribs – A blow to the chest in an accident can fracture one or more ribs. A broken rib may, in turn, puncture internal organs. For this reason, it is important to take any sharp chest pain seriously after an accident.
- Lungs – If the lung is punctured in an accident – by a cracked rib, for instance – it can cause air to quickly leak out. The air gets trapped between the lung and chest wall, which causes pressure to be placed on the lung and, ultimately, prevents one from breathing. This is called a “collapsed lung,” or pneumothorax.
- Abdomen – This area of the body commonly suffers trauma in auto accidents due to hitting the steering wheel or getting squeezed by a seat belt. The trauma may cause abdominal organs such as the spleen or liver to tear or rupture. A sharp pain from under the rib cage and blurry vision, dizziness, nausea and fainting may all be signs of abdominal injuries.
- Kidneys – Kidney injuries also are common in motor vehicle crashes. The kidneys may become bruised, cut or torn due to trauma. If one’s body goes into shock or if one experiences a sharp pain in the sides or blood in one’s urine or stool, it may indicate kidney injury.
The reality is that most of us do not know whether we have suffered these or other internal injuries due to an accident. This is the main reason why you should always go to the emergency room or get examined by your primary care physician after you have been involved in an accident of any kind.
However, there is another highly important reason: Protecting your legal rights. An insurance company will look for every opportunity to deny a claim or diminish the amount you receive. When you fail to see a doctor and get your injuries diagnosed – including internal injuries – it gives the insurance company the opportunity to argue that your injuries are either unrelated to your accident or not as severe as you claim.
If you are concerned about affording medical treatment or believe your insurance company is forcing you to see a doctor that is not your choice, contact Marks & Harrison for immediate legal assistance.
